CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team swept an A-R-C opponent for the third time in 2024 on Wednesday afternoon at Clark Field, defeating Simpson 10-0 and 6-5 in a pair of conference matchups. Coe got a stellar five-inning no-hitter from
Ellie Thurow in the opener and combined that with 10 runs for an easy run-rule win in the opener. The Kohawks were forced to fight back in the second game, trailing for most of the contest until the dramatic ending. Simpson scored three runs early on to jump ahead and added two in the sixth and seventh to lead 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh. The Kohawks made no mistakes in their final chance at the plate with a pair of singles from
Heather Boeckenstedt and
Ruby Kappeler to start the inning.
Madi Parson capped off the perfect day with a dramatic three-run bomb over the left-field wall, her second homer of the year and 12th of her career.
COE 10 - SIMPSON 0 - FIVE INNINGS
Game Facts
- Coe and Simpson were both held scoreless in the opening two innings but the hosts struck in the third, scoring four runs on five hits. Addie Menke, Boeckenstedt and Kappeler led the inning off with three singles with Kappeler earning an RBI to make it 1-0. Boeckenstedt also scored on the play, scampering home after a defensive miscue from Simpson. The Kohawks made it 3-0 later with a sacrifice fly from Shaylee Dodd and ended the scoring with a two-out RBI single from Bree Mangelsen. The Kohawk offense stayed hot in the bottom of the fourth, leading off with a solo homer from Marisa Vodicka. The hosts added five more runs in the inning, getting RBI from Parson, Dodd and Keera Ball who delivered a three-run double to break it open. Thurow returned to the circle in search of the no-hitter, retiring the Storm in order to complete the job. Her no-hitter is the first of her career and Coe's first since Spring Break of the 2023 season.

- Simpson got the scoring started in the top of the second, getting a one-out homer for a 1-0 lead. Coe quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with one of its own, loading the bases with one out. A wild pitch allowed all three runners to move up with Dodd scoring on the play. Simpson got the run back and added another, scoring twice in the top of the third to restore its lead. Coe's offense tied the score in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice on a pair of hits and one defensive miscue from Simpson. The error allowed the opening run to score with Taylor Drayfahl scoring in pinch-running appearance. Boeckenstedt drove home the second run with a clutch two-strike single with the bases loaded. On the play, Marisa Vodicka attempted to give Coe the lead but was ultimately thrown out at the plate on a perfect throw from center. Simpson regained the lead in the sixth on a one-out single and added an insurance run in the seventh with a two-out homer. The top of Coe's order stayed hot in the bottom of the seventh and pulled off the dramatic victory, getting three-straight hits including the game-winning bomb from Parson.
