Softball splits doubleheader with Nebraska Wesleyan

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team split a doubleheader with Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday at Clark Field, winning the opening game 8-7 before falling 12-2 in game two. The Kohawks and Prairie Wolves traded late flurries in the opener with the visitors taking a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning after explosive fifth and sixth frames. Coe responded with four in its half of the sixth and two more in the seventh to tie the game and force extras. Skyler Stookey wasted no time in the bottom of the eighth, leading off with a walk-off homer to give Coe an 8-7 win. NWU again scored late runs in game two, eliminating a one-run deficit with one in the fourth and eight in the sixth. The Prairie Wolves completed the run-rule victory in the sixth, adding three more insurance runs before shutting out Coe for the win.

  • The Kohawks started the scoring in game one, using a sacrifice fly from Madi Parson to go up 1-0. NWU put the first crooked number on the board in the fifth, scoring four runs all with two outs to take a 4-1 lead. The Prairie Wolves added to their advantage in the sixth, pushing three more across on a pair of homers for a 7-1 lead. Coe refused to go quietly despite the deficit, answering with five hits and four runs in the bottom of the frame. Marisa Vodicka and Addie Menke started a two-out rally with a double and two-run homer to cut the lead to four. Ruby Kappeler added Coe's second two-run blast of the inning moments later, hammering home Heather Boeckenstedt with the big blow. Coe tied the game with two outs in the seventh, taking advantage of a defensive miscue from the Prairie Wolves to make it 7-7. Stookey delivered the game-ending blow to begin the eighth, crushing a walk-off homer to left for her eighth of the year.

  • Coe again struck first in game two, getting an RBI triple from Boeckenstedt in the third for a 1-0 lead. NWU immediately answered in the fourth, scoring the game-tying run with an RBI single. The visitors struck large in the following frame, scoring eight runs on five hits to blow the game open. The Kohawks stayed alive in the bottom of the fifth, forcing another inning with a two-out RBI from Shaylee Dodd. NWU added three more to its total in the sixth, putting the game out of reach with a 12-2 advantage. 
 
Up Next: The Kohawks are back in action tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan beginning at 2 PM.
