Softball drops doubleheader at Central on Saturday

PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College softball team dropped a pair of A-R-C games at Central on Saturday, falling 10-9 in game one and 5-4 in game two. The Kohawks raced out to an early lead in the opening game, scoring six runs across the first two innings. The Dutch clawed back over the next few innings and pulled within one of the lead in the fifth. Coe got three more runs to regain a comfortable advantage but the Dutch pulled off the comeback late in the game, scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh before a walk-off winner in the eighth. The hosts scored three runs in the bottom of the first in game two, using the momentum for an early lead. Coe fought back and pulled within one run in the fourth inning but failed to get any closer as the Dutch secured the doubleheader sweep.

  • The scoring started in the first for Coe, getting an RBI double from Ruby Kappeler and a three-run double from Keera Ball. The Kohawks added to their lead in the second as Kappeler delivered another RBI single for a 5-0 advantage. The Kohawks made it 6-0 before the end of the inning with Skyler Stookey driving home Kappeler on a single. Central pulled itself back into the game over the next few innings, scoring five times before the end of the fifth to make it 6-5. Coe regained its multi-run lead in the sixth and added more in the seventh, extending the lead to 9-5 in part to RBI from Heather Boeckenstedt and Kappeler. Central put the pressure on early in the seventh, getting back-to-back singles to start. The hosts later made it 9-7 in back-to-back at-bats, getting a pair of RBI to cut the deficit. The Dutch tied the game with two outs later in the frame, getting a clutch two-run triple to force extras. Central won the game in the eighth, taking advantage of a leadoff single and some small ball to secure the opener.

  • The Dutch kept things rolling in game two, scoring three runs on three hits in the opening inning. The Kohawks got a solo homer in the top of the second from Hadyn Shoots but again Central answered with one run in the home half. The Dutch got their final run of the game in the third inning on a defensive miscue from the Kohawks, extending their lead to 5-1. Coe quickly responded in the fourth with three runs on three hits, getting RBI from Rylee Newhard, Boeckenstedt and Kappeler. Coe had one final chance to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning, getting runners on the corners with two outs but the hosts worked out of the jam and hung on for the sweep. 
 
Up Next: The Kohawks are back in action on Tuesday, April 9 for another A-R-C doubleheader, taking on Buena Vista in Storm Lake at 3 PM.
