GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Coe College softball team stayed unbeaten in the Greencastle regional on Friday morning, defeating Saint Mary's 6-3 in nine innings to advance to championship Saturday. The Kohawks trailed most of the contest, spotting Saint Mary's a two-run lead in the first inning as the Cardinals used a two-run homer to jump ahead. The teams traded runs in the third inning but the Kohawks pulled to within one run in the fourth on an RBI single from
Keera Ball. The Kohawks, down to their final out in the top of the seventh, tied the game on an RBI hit from
Ruby Kappeler to force extra innings. Coe's offense exploded for three runs in the top of the ninth, taking the lead on another RBI from Kappeler before a two-run homer from
Madi Parson sealed the deal. Fifth-year senior
Ellie Thurow went the distance for her 17th win of the year and second of the regional, scattering 12 hits while limiting Saint Mary's to just three earned runs.

- The Cardinals got on the board first, using a two-run two-out homer to jump on the board. The Kohawks got one back a few innings later, getting an RBI double from Kappeler as Heather Boeckenstedt scored Coe's opening run. SMU regained a two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, using some ball to push home a run. The back-and-forth scoring continued in the fourth as Coe sliced the deficit to one on Ball's RBI single. The game went quiet for both teams over the next few innings despite run-scoring chances for each. Coe stayed alive in the top of the seventh, getting a leadoff single from Marisa Vodicka to set the table. Kappeler cashed in later in the frame with two down, singling home Vodicka to knot the score at three. Saint Mary's threatened in the bottom of the seventh with two runners in scoring position but Thurow ended the chance with fly out. Coe outlasted the opposition with three in the top of the ninth. Boeckenstedt started the rally with a single to right and was quickly driven home on a single from Kappeler. Parson delivered the hammer blow in the next at-bat, crushing a two-run bomb to right-center. Thurow ran into another jam in the bottom of the ninth but got the game-tying run to fly out to end the game.
Up Next: Coe is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, May 18, needing one win to claim the regional title. The championship game will take place at 10 AM CT with an in-necessary game following 30 minutes after.
