KENOSHA, Wisc. — The Coe College women's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the year Tuesday evening at Carthage, falling 60-51 to the Firebirds. The Kohawks opened the game well, outscoring the hosts 16-10 in the first quarter to gain control. Carthage responded in the next two quarters, outscoring Coe 32-18 in the second and third to take an eight-point lead into the final frame. The Kohawks got within five points of the lead near the five-minute mark at 46-41 but a solid stretch from the Firebirds put the game out of reach.
Caydee Kirkham led Coe's offensive efforts in the game with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists while adding four steals on the defensive end.
Taryn Kravig and
Audrie Helmrichs each had seven points while
Kelly Knight, Averiel Brady and
Quinn Grubbs had five each.

- Coe scored eight unanswered points to start the game, getting points from four different players during the run. The Kohawks made it an 11-point game later in the quarter as Kirkham hit a jumper to make it 14-3 with 2:58 left in the period. Carthage slowly cut into the lead before the end of the first, scoring five straight to end the period with Coe in front 16-10. Carthage quickly made it a one-possession game, scoring the first two buckets of the second quarter to pull within one. The remainder of the period was back-and-forth with the teams trading buckets throughout the period but a late three from the Firebirds gave the hosts a 27-25 lead at the break. The hosts extended their lead to seven before the six-minute mark, pushing it to 34-27 with seven of the first nine points. Carthage made it 42-32 late in the quarter with a four-point stretch but a layup from Grubbs got it back to a single-digit difference before the fourth. Coe charged back in the fourth and made it a five-point game as Kirkham hit a jumper to cut it to 46-41. Carthage managed the lead for the final minutes, converting its free throws while limiting Coe's offense to see out the victory.
