Kirkham & Helmrichs power women’s basketball past Buena Vista in A-R-C opener

STORM LAKE, Iowa — The Coe College women's basketball team opened the American Rivers Conference schedule with a road win Wednesday evening, defeating the Buena Vista University Beavers 55-47. The Kohawks were powered by its leading offensive duo as Caydee Kirkham and Audrie Helmrichs combined for 37 of Coe's 55 points. The Kohawks had their best quarter to start the game, opening an early 22-14 lead after shooting a blistering 56.3 percent from the field. Buena Vista slowly closed the gap after the halftime break, pulling within eight of Coe's lead ahead of the fourth quarter. A layup to start the period made it a six-point lead for the Kohawks but Helmrichs reestablished a comfortable lead with back-to-back buckets on the following possessions. Kirkham led Coe's scoring with 21 points while adding seven boards and two assists. Helmrichs was one rebound shy of a double-double, registering 16 points and nine rebounds as she added two assists and two steals. Averiel Brady (7) and Kelly Knight (6) finished off Coe's other major scoring contributions with Coe shooting 22-of-55 overall.
