CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College women's basketball team opened its home schedule in style Saturday afternoon with a victory over the reigning two-time A-R-C conference tournament champion Wartburg, defeating the Knights 65-51 at Kohawk Arena. Coe started the game on top, outscoring the visitors 16-8 in the first period as
Taryn Kravig had 11-first quarter points including a trio of 3s. Wartburg fought back in the second quarter and sliced the deficit to four at the halftime break, putting pressure on Coe heading into the locker room. The third period was back-and-forth with the teams trading blows throughout but a quick 5-0 quarter-ending run from the Knights made it a three-point game ahead of the fourth. Coe's defense dominated to start the fourth quarter, holding the Knights scoreless for the opening five-plus minutes while extending its advantage of nine at 48-39. A pair of free throws for the Knights ended the run but an additional 7-0 scoring stretch from Coe put the game away as
Kelly Knight capped the run with a dagger 3. Wartburg kept fighting but couldn't make a dent in the lead as the Kohawks maintained the advantage over the final few minutes of action.
Caydee Kirkham was a pivotal part of Coe's win, totaling 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists while playing all 40 minutes. Kravig (14) and Knight (13) were Coe's other double-digits scorers while
Audrie Helmrichs chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.

- Wartburg started the scoring in the game, ripping off five straight including a 3 to open the contest. Kravig and Knight responded for the Kohawks, answering with back-to-back 3s before the six-minute mark. Coe controlled the remainder of the period, ending the frame on a 10-3 run that included eight more from Kravig as she capped the run with her third triple of the first. Wartburg started strong in quarter two, using a 15-7 run to level the game at 23. Coe settled in during the next few minutes and reestablished a lead, scoring six unanswered as Laiken Haas scored a layup and two free throws to make it 29-23. The Knights scored the final bucket of the half around the one-minute mark, closing the gap to four at the break. Kirkham was on fire after the half, scoring seven of Coe's first 11 points as she led a quick run to put Coe up 40-32. The Knights stayed in the game with a crucial stretch to end the third, scoring seven of the final nine points to make it a one-possession game. Coe put its foot down to start the fourth, opening with six unanswered points to make it 48-39 at the 4:44 mark. The 7-0 run came moments later as Kirkham hit four straight free throws before Knight's 3 made it 55-41. Knight hit another game-sealing 3 at the 1:02, knocking down the clincher to make it 63-46.
