Women’s Basketball wins third straight with fourth quarter comeback at Central

PELLA, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team picked up its third straight win Saturday afternoon in a road A-R-C matchup, defeating the Central College Dutch 68-64. The Kohawks displayed a balanced scoring attack throughout the contest, getting four double-digit scorers en route to the victory. The game featured 13 lead changes with the teams trading blows from the opening whistle. Central held a 56-50 lead with nine minutes to play in the game but the Kohawks ended on an 18-8 run, getting 10 points from Taylor Brunson to help secure the win. Brunson and Audrie Helmrichs converted the clutch buckets for Coe in the final seconds, hitting back-to-back shots to give Coe the lead for good. Brunson (16) and Helmrichs (10) were joined by Ellie Wisner (20) and Caydee Kirkham (10) in double-figures while Taryn Kravig (8) rounded out the major contributions.

GAME FACTS
  • The teams were inseparable after the opening quarter, scoring 16 points apiece as both offenses managed to find some early scoring. Wisner had eight points in the first period, scoring all eight in the final two minutes of the frame. The second quarter was nearly identical to the first with both teams scoring 16 points. Coe's scoring was balanced in the period, getting six points from Kravig, four from Kirkham and Wisner and two from Helmrichs. Central took the first significant lead midway through the third quarter, ripping off a 12-5 run to go up 46-41 with 4:41 left in the period. Coe got back on terms near the two-minute mark with the score level at 50 but the hosts took a 52-50 lead with the final bucket of the third. The Dutch got four straight points to begin the final frame but Coe quickly answered, tying the game at 57 before the seven-minute mark. The teams traded baskets over the next phase of the game until the Kohawks scored back-to-back buckets, getting a game-tying jumper from Brunson and a go-ahead lay-in from Helmrichs. Central went 1-of-2 in a potential game-tying trip to the free throw line, giving Coe a chance to ice the game. Kirkham and Brunson converted on the other end for the Kohawks, sealing the victory at the line.
