Softball drops season-opening games to St. Catherine & WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Coe College softball team opened its 2025 season Saturday at the WashU Invite, falling in a pair of non-conference matchups to St. Catherine and WashU. The Kohawks fell behind in their opening game to the Wildcats, spotting the opposition five runs in the third inning. Coe quickly responded in the following half inning, getting a three-run homer from Marisa Vodicka but St. Kate's padded their lead with an insurance run in the bottom of the inning and hung on for the victory. WashU belted out 17 hits in the second matchup of the day, scoring five runs in both the third and fifth innings. Coe got its runs on RBI hits from Maddie Harris and Vodicka but the lead proved insurmountable. Vodicka was one of three players to record at least one hit in both games, being joined by Ruby Olson and Maddie Harris

The Wildcats blew the game open in the third inning, scoring five runs on three hits while taking advantage of three free passes. St. Kate's let Coe right back into the game in the top of the fourth as Vodicka delivered a three-run blast to cut the deficit to two. The opponents regained a three-run lead in the bottom of the inning and never looked back, limiting Coe to one run on an RBI double from Harris in the top of the fifth. Coe had the game-tying batter at the plate in the top of the sixth inning but St. Kate's avoided any drama and recorded the final four outs.
