Softball drops doubleheader at Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Coe College softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at Augustana Tuesday evening, falling 11-3 in game one before a 10-6 extra-inning defeat in game two. The Kohawks fell behind early in the opener, surrendering six runs in the first two frames. Coe fought back with three runs in the sixth including a two-run homer from Marisa Vodicka but the Vikings responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game. Coe had a solid response in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from Maddie Harris. The Kohawks regained a lead in the fourth but surrendered three back to Augustana in the top of the fifth. Coe tied the game in the seventh on a two-out double from Vodicka but the hosts exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth to complete the sweep.

  • The hosts scored six runs in the opening two innings, getting a three-run homer in the second inning to cap off the early start. The Vikings added another in the fourth to extend the lead to seven but Coe fought back in the sixth inning. The Kohawks scored three runs in the top of the sixth to get back within touching distance, using three hits in the frame. Harris knocked home the first run with a single to center before Vodicka blasted a two-run homer to left-center. Augustana responded immediately in the home half of the sixth, scoring four runs on two hits. The hosts got the opening run on a bases loaded walk before taking a 10-3 lead with a two-run single. The game ended one batter later with a sacrifice fly, winning on the run rule in the sixth. 
 
AUGUSTANA 10 - COE 6 - EIGHT INNINGS

  • Coe responded well in the second game, taking a lead in the opening inning on an RBI single from Harris. The Vikings tied the game in the third inning with a solo homer, making it 1-1 with a blast down the left-field line. Coe played small ball for its second run, regaining the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Haley Sanders. Augustana responded in the top of the fifth inning, taking its first lead of the contest with three runs on three hits and one Coe error. Vodicka drove in another run in the bottom of the inning to again make it a one-run game, driving home Hadyn Shoots with a groundout. Vodicka again came up clutch in Coe's final chance in the seventh, tying the game on a double that nearly scored the game-winning run but a strong relay from the Vikings sent the game to extras. Augustana quickly answered, taking the lead on a passed ball before adding five insurance runs. Coe loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, scoring runs on a walk from Allie Decman and a single from Shoots but Augustana slammed the door and finished off the victory.
