Softball falls to no. 18 Calvin & no. 4 Rowan in Florida

CLERMONT, Fl. – The Coe College softball team dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked opponents on its first day in Florida, falling 8-0 to no. 18 Calvin and 6-1 to no. 4 Rowan. Coe fell in five innings in the opener as the Knights scored three runs in the second inning before adding five in the fourth inning. The Kohawks got a double in the top of the fifth inning to put a runner in scoring position but Calvin shut the door and ended the game with the run rule. Rowan struck early in the second game of the day, scoring four runs in the opening inning with a pair of RBI hits and a defensive miscue. The Profs and Kohawks traded a run in the second and third inning with Maddie Harris delivering an RBI double for the Kohawks to make it 5-1. Rowan added another run in the fifth and held on over the final few innings, limiting Coe to three total hits.

  • The Knights scored three runs in the second inning, taking the lead with an RBI double before adding two runs on sacrifice flies to right. Calvin exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth, using four hits and a pair of Coe errors to take an eight-run lead. The Kohawks got a one-out double from Natalie Hitt in the top of the fifth but back-to-back pop outs ended the game as Calvin secured the win.

  • Rowan got three straight one-out hits in the first-inning, taking a 2-0 lead with a two-run triple. Another RBI hit from the next batter made it 3-0 before an errant throw brought home the fourth run of the frame. The Profs got another in the second inning, extending the lead with a run-scoring groundout. Harris got Coe on the board in the bottom of the third after a leadoff single for Nicole Wagner, bringing home the senior with a double to left to cut the deficit to four. Rowan scored the game's final run in the fifth with a safety squeeze play, executing it to take a 6-1 lead. Coe put multiple runners on base in the final two innings but left a pair of runners on in sixth before leaving the bases loaded in the seventh.
