Softball drops matchups with UW-La Crosse & no. 21 UW-Whitewater

CLERMONT, Fl. – The Coe College softball suffered defeats to UW-La Crosse and no. 21 UW-Whitewater Sunday morning on the second day of its spring break trip. The Kohawks fell 6-4 to UWL in the opening game of the day, surrendering 10 hits in the game including the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the sixth inning. Coe's offense mustered six hits, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning and one in the third. Addie Menke and Marisa Vodicka each had a pair of hits while Jessica Meisinger and Haley Sanders picked up Coe's RBI. The Kohawks ran into a strong Whitewater squad in the second contest of the day, falling 9-1 to the Warhawks. UW-Whitewater scored runs in all but one of the five innings, putting multiple runs on the board in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. Coe's lone run came in the top of the first on a throwing error from UWW as Menke crossed home for an early lead.

  • La Crosse started the game with four straight hits, taking a 1-0 lead just two batters in with an RBI double. The Eagles made it 3-0 before the end of the frame, adding runs with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Coe responded well in the bottom of the first inning, using a pair of free passes and wild pitch to make it 3-1 at Menke scampered home. Meisinger then delivered an RBI single that scored two runs, tying the game as Maddie Harris and Vodicka scored. The Kohawks took their first lead in the bottom of the third, getting an infield single from Sanders that scored Vodicka to make it 4-3. The Eagles quick answered and knotted the score at four in the top of the fourth, using a two-out single to level the action. UWL polished off the victory in the sixth and seventh innings, taking the lead in the top of the sixth with another two-out hit.  Coe packed the basses in the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive walks but back-to-back groundouts ended the scoring chance. La Crosse added a key insurance run in the seventh, extending the lead with an RBI double. Coe brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh after a double from Vodicka but the Eagles slammed the door shut with a groundout and strikeout.

  • Three straight hitters reached for Coe to start the second game as Menke, Meisinger and Harris loaded the bases. Coe managed to bring one run home to take the lead but solid defensive plays from UWW kept it a one-run game. Whitewater responded in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead for good, scoring a pair of runs on a two-out single. The Warhawks went on to add two runs in the second and fourth innings to extend the lead. Coe managed hits in all but one inning but was unable to produce any more runs, leaving runners on base in every inning but the fifth. The Warhawks ended the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on two hits including the game-winning single with the bases loaded.
