PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Coe College wrestling team opened its account at the DIII National Championships Friday, competing in the opening two sessions of action. All four Kohawk qualifiers secured all-American status on the first day as
Brayden Parke, Bryce Parke, LJ Richardson and
Jared Voss advanced to the second day leading Coe to sit in a tie for seventh place on the team standings with 39.0 points. Senior 133-pounder
Bryce Parke made headlines for Coe, going 2-0 with a pair of falls as the Marion native booked his place into the semifinals while earning all-American status. Bryce was dominant on the opening day, picking up a pair of falls over Vincent Ziccardi (Washington & Lee) and second-seeded Petyon Ellis (JWU). He took out Ziccardi in the second period in 3:14 before toppling Ellis in 4:11 with another second-period fall. His bonus-point victories were two of nine total for the Kohawks with each of the four wrestlers picking up at least one. Richardson and Voss both fell in the quarterfinal rounds after bonus-point wins in the opening round but bounced back in the consolation bracket, each securing falls to claim all-American honors. Richardson outlasted Jackson Gray (Ithaca), taking him out in 6:00 while Voss struck quickly for a first-period fall in 36 seconds against Blake Williams (Adrian).
Brayden Parke was forced to fight even harder for his all-American status after falling in the opening round to Jake Craig (Southern Maine). He earned back-to-back major decisions in the consolation third and fourth rounds, shutting out Brett Birchman (Wartburg) 12-0 before an 18-7 major against Quinton Wolbert (UW-La Crosse).
