Softball splits doubleheader at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Coe College softball team played its first doubleheader since returning from Florida Wednesday evening, splitting a pair of games at Cornell with a 4-1 loss in game one and 5-4 defeat in game two. The Kohawks suffered a defeat in the Bremner Cup matchup, falling 4-1 despite out-hitting the Rams 5-3. Cornell got all its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on one big swing, getting a grand slam to take the lead for good. Coe bounced back in game two, edging Cornell for a 5-4 victory as Devan Baggett earned a win in the circle. The Kohawks trailed from the opening inning, spotting the Rams a 3-0 advantage but one in the fifth and four runs in the sixth put Coe ahead. Cornell got the tying run on third in the bottom of the sixth but Baggett hung tough and locked down the victory. The Kohawk RBI came from Addie Menke and Marisa Vodicka with Menke recording a team-high two hits.

CORNELL 4 - COE 1
Game Facts
  • Coe left the bases loaded in the first inning, using a pair of two-out walks to jam the bags before an inning-ending pop out. The Kohawks went ahead in the top of the fourth, using back-to-back hits from Katelyn Bladecki and Haley Sanders who drove Bladecki in with a double. Cornell needed just one inning for its scoring, loading the bases with one out after a double, a walk and a single. The homer came in the next at-bat as the Rams cleared the bases, taking a 4-1 lead which was enough despite a runner in scoring position for Coe in the seventh.

COE 5 - CORNELL 4
Game Facts
  • Cornell jumped ahead in the second game, riding the momentum to take a 3-0 lead with four hits. The Rams extended the lead in the bottom of the fourth, getting a two-out single to push the advantage to 4-0. Coe put runners on first and second in the top of the fifth and later tried some small ball, scoring one run on an errant throw. Two Kohawks were retired during the sequence despite the run coming home as Cornell escaped the jam with just one run allowed. Coe completed the comeback in the top of the sixth, getting three hits and one error to help score four runs. Menke drove home Nicole Wagner who led off with a single and was quickly followed by Vodicka who plated Maddie Harris with an RBI groundout. Coe's final runs scored on an error from Cornell's defense as Jessica Meisinger reached on a misplayed ground ball, scoring Menke and herself as she scampered around the bases with the ball reaching the wall. Baguette went back for the sixth and seventh inning and worked around a pair of runners in the sixth before a clean 1, 2, 3 inning in the seventh to lock down the victory.
