Softball run rules Dubuque in opening game to split doubleheader

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College softball team split a pair of American Rivers Conference games Saturday afternoon at Clark Field, defeating the University of Dubuque Spartans 9-1 in game one before falling 2-1 in game two. Coe's offense exploded for nine runs and 11 hits in the opener, run-ruling the Spartans in the dominant effort. Natalie Hitt earned her sixth win of the season in the circle, backing up a strong offensive display with seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits. Hadyn Shoots and Katelyn Bladecki had a game-high two RBI each while Marisa Vodicka and Katelyn Bladecki had one each. Dubuque responded in game two, edging out the split thanks to a two-run homer in the top of the third inning. Coe put pressure on the Spartans in the bottom of the seventh, scoring once on a single from Taylor Drayfahl but UD got a game-ending groundout to claim the win.

  • Coe fell behind in the second inning as UD scored its lone run in the top of the frame with a two-out double. The hosts quickly answered, scoring three in response to reclaim the advantage. Nicole Wagner singled to start the inning and was joined on base by Vodicka who reached on an error. Katelyn Bladecki drove home the first two with a double down the left-field line, scoring Drayfahl and Vodicka for a 2-1 lead. Jessica Meisinger made it 3-1 in the next at-bat, singling up the middle to plate Bladecki from second. Coe extended the lead in the bottom of the third, getting three more runs on four hits. Maddie Harris and Wagner singled to start the inning before Drayfahl made it 4-1 with a single through the left side. Bladecki delivered another two-run knock to make it 6-1, driving home Wagner and Drayfahl with a single to left center. Coe added three more to seal the deal in the bottom of the fourth, getting a two-run double from Shoots and a one-run double from Vodicka. Hitt went back to the circle for the top of the fifth inning and worked around a two-out single to shut the door and secure the victory.

  • The Spartans jumped ahead in the third with a big blast, taking a 2-0 lead with two down in the top of the third. Coe left one on base in the bottom of the sixth, stranding Addie Menke after a two-out single. The Kohawks continued to press in the seventh, getting a leadoff single from Wagner but a fly-out double play gave the Spartans two outs and clean slate. Vodicka doubled and was immediately driven home on a single from Drayfahl to cut the deficit to one. UD ended the game in the next at-bat, getting a groundout to record the final out and secure the split.
