Softball sweeps league-leading Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Coe College softball team handed Simpson College its first A-R-C sweep of the 2025 season Saturday afternoon, taking down the league-leading Storm 8-5 and 4-3. Coe and Simpson were tightly contested in the opening game, trading scoreless frames across the first four but RBI from Addie Menke and Maddie Harris gave Coe a lead. Simpson responded with one in the fifth and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh but six runs in the top of the tenth inning was enough for Coe as the hosts could only muster three in response in the bottom of the inning. Devan Baggett and Natalie Hitt combined to slow down the offense of the Storm in game two and were complemented by a four-run fourth inning which saw Hadyn Shoots, Marisa Vodicka and Jessica Meisinger pick up RBI. Hitt came in for the final two innings to lock down the victory, earning her second save of the year as she stranded the bases loaded in the sixth and left a leadoff runner at first in the seventh.

GAME ONE
COE 8 - SIMPSON 5
Game Facts
  • Both teams had traffic in the opening innings but failed to capitalize, trading scoreless frames for the first four. Coe struck first in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with no outs before RBI groundouts from Menke and Harris made it 2-0. Simpson pulled one back in the bottom of the inning, using a sacrifice fly to halve the deficit entering the sixth. The Storm leveled the game in the seventh, getting a leadoff single and a one-out double but Hitt, who came in relief of Abbie White, hung tough and sent the game to extras. Coe found the runs first in extras, scoring six times in the top of the tenth on four hits and a Storm error. Vodicka walked and was joined on base by Taylor Drayfahl before a sacrifice bunt from Katelyn Bladecki made it second and third. Vodicka scored the first run on a throwing error before a two-run single from Nicole Wagner made it 5-2. Harris added another two-run knock to extend it to 7-2 before a rally-capping RBI single from Shoots for 8-2. Simpson struck back with three runs in the bottom of the 10th with a pair of RBI hits but Hitt left two runners on with a game-ending groundout.

GAME TWO
COE 4 - SIMPSON 3
Game Facts
  • Simpson took the lead in game two, scoring once in the bottom of the first inning but the hosts left the bases loaded to end any further chance. The advantage was doubled in the third as Simpson used a leadoff base runner and a one-out single to make it 2-0. Coe's big inning came immediately after, striking with four runs on five hits and one error. Harris and Shoots ripped back-to-back two-out doubles to make it 2-1 before an RBI single from Vodicka tied the score at 2. A throwing error from the catcher brought home Vodicka on the following play for 3-2 while the inning was capped off later with an RBI single from Meisinger. Simpson got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, using a leadoff single and some small ball to make it a one-run game. The Storm had another huge chance in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases with no outs but solid defense from the Kohawks ended the threat and helped seal the win.
