CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College men's soccer team won its second straight game on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field, defeating the Buena Vista University Beavers 3-1 on Senior Day. The Kohawk men started hot with three goals in the first half as
Jonah Lasselle scored twice while
Brandon Kostelny added a crucial third. Lasselle opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finding space in the box to connect with a headed effort after a perfectly floated corner from
James Napieralski. Lasselle bagged his brace minutes later, sprinting up to a perfectly played pass from
Valentin Lobos before beating his defender to the near post and firing past the keeper. Kostelny ended the first-half scoring in the 22nd minute, taking down a floated pass from Lobos and calmly finishing for 3-0. Buena Vista fought back in the second half, scoring a late goal in the 89th minute, but Coe's lead was enough as the Kohawks won their second straight A-R-C game.
COE 3 - BVU 1
GAME FACTS
- Lasselle's opening goal was straight from the training ground as Napieralski played a lofted ball near the six-yard box into space where Coe's star freshman lept above the crowd and headed home. He did more impressive work for his second goal, chasing down a lovely ball from Lobos down the channel before shrugging off a defender and firing a shot across goal and into the side netting. Kostelny made it 3-0 minutes later as Lobos started it from the midfield with a flicked ball over the top of BVU's defense to find Coe's number 10, who settled the pass with a perfect touch before firing a low strike into the corner. The Kohawks continued to pile on the pressure for the remainder of the match, totaling 12 shots on target despite not scoring again. BVU did pull back a consolation goal in the 89th minute, scoring from a corner kick to end the match at 3-1.
