CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College Football team won its fifth straight game on Halloween Saturday at Clark Field, defeating the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves 48-21. The Kohawks and Prairie Wolves traded scoreless drives in the first quarter but
Quincy Drummer found the end zone for his first of four scores to make it 7-0. A kick-return touchdown on the following play for NWU leveled the score again, but Coe responded with 28 unanswered points before the end of the half to take control of the game. Drummer hit pay dirt three more times during the stretch, plunging in from one yard out before ripping off a 95-yard sprint for 21-7.
Jackson Baethke extended the lead to 28-7 with a 12-yard catch-and-run before Drummer made it four first-half scores, catching a dump-down pass from
Brady Kelly before beating a handful of defenders en route to the end zone. Kelly punched in Coe's next score to start the third quarter, running in from 23 yards out as Coe made it 41-7. The Kohawks turned to their reserves for the rest of the game, limiting the Prairie Wolves to a pair of scores while
Khanai Langford added a passing touchdown to
Reed McNutt. Drummer finished with 200 yards and three scores on the ground while adding one catch for 18 yards and a touchdown. Defensively,
Zachary Waghorn had eight total tackles, including a pair of TFLs and one sack. As a team, Coe picked off three Prairie Wolf passes with
Henry Ryan, Jack Clarahan and
Ryker Dengler forcing turnovers for the defense.
GAME FACTS:
COE 48 - NWU 21
- Coe struck first after three scoreless drives between the teams, marching 83 yards in 14 plays before Drummer plunged in from one yard out. NWU quickly answered on the ensuing kickoff, returning the chance for a 90-yard score for 7-7. Drummer cashed in again on Coe's next drive, going 69 yards on eight plays to set up Drummer's second one-yard score in as many drives. NWU had the best drive of the second quarter midway through, moving quickly into Coe's territory for a goal-to-go situation. The visitors quickly went backward as Clarahan and Marcus Richard recorded tackles for losses before Dengler picked off a fourth-down prayer into the end zone. Drummer needed no time at all for his third score on the following drive, striking for a 95-yard run where he beat the entire Nebraska Wesleyan down the right sideline before crossing the goal line. Another failed fourth-down try on the next possession from NWU gave Coe excellent field position with Kelly taking over near midfield. Four plays later he connected with Baethke, finding his wide receiver streaking out of the backfield for a walk-in touchdown for 28-7. Ryan came up with a near pick-six on Wesleyan's first play after the TD, picking off a pass in the middle of the field before returning it into the red zone. Drummer found the end zone for the fourth time in the first half with another explosive play, this time catching a dump-off pass from Kelly and evading a plethora of defenders before hitting pay dirt. The starters put the game to bed on the first drive of the third quarter, quickly moving into NWU territory before Kelly eluded a chasing defender and sprinted in for a 23-yard score. Wesleyan and Coe would then trade touchdowns in the final stages of the third quarter, with Langford making a nice play on a third-and-goal, rolling to his right to buy time before a perfect strike found McNutt in the endzone. The Prairie Wolves ended the scoring for the game in the fourth, picking up another consolation touchdown as the game ended with Coe on top 48-21.
