Men's Tennis Spring Break Recap: Kohawks defeat Illinois Wesleyan & George Fox in Florida

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College Men's Tennis team wrapped up its Florida trip Wednesday, going 2-2 in four matches with wins over Illinois Wesleyan and George Fox and losses to Hobart and Southwestern. Coe, which led in an additional match against Edgewood that was canceled due to rain, started the week with a 6-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan. Coe used all 12 players in the victory and won five of six singles matches in straight sets after sweeping the doubles competition. The Kohawks suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat to Hobart later that day, falling 2-1 in the doubles competition before a comeback in singles fell just short. Coe's following two matches were canceled due to rain before the team was back in action on Tuesday, picking up a 6-1 victory over George Fox. The Kohawks edged the Bruins in doubles with wins at numbers two and three, and then won five of six singles matches, with three tie-break winners for Coe. Coe's final match started with a 3-0 decision in doubles for the opposing Pirates as the Kohawks fell behind early. Southwestern finished off the victory in singles, with four of six matches going its way. Overall, Coe was 15-9 in singles, led by Ivan Burt-Smith and Grant Idoux, who were each 2-0. Luke Doig, Anthony Schulte and Joshua Tiemann also picked up two wins in singles to help Coe post the .625 winning percentage. In doubles, Rohlman / Schulte and Burt-Smith / Tiemann were 2-1 to lead the Kohawk pairs.
