Softball winless against Simpson in A-R-C opening doubleheader

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Kohawks softball team dropped both games against Simpson College in an A-R-C matchup on Easter Sunday. Coe hosted the Storm in a rescheduled doubleheader from the previous day and fell 8–6 in game one and 5–1 in game two. Natalie Hitt once again took the circle for the Kohawks in game one, pitching all seven innings and striking out five batters. She also contributed offensively with two hits. As a team, the Kohawks recorded 15 hits, with multiple hits coming from Keirah Wiseman, Grace McCarty, Maddie Harris, Marissa Vodicka, and Hitt. Katelyn Bladecki opened the scoring for the Kohawks with a solo home run—her first of the year—in the second inning to tie the game at 1–1. Harris later broke the game open with a bases-clearing grand slam, her second of the year, giving Coe a four-run lead. However, the lead was short-lived, as Simpson responded with seven unanswered runs to take game one. Game two began similarly, with the Storm jumping out to an early lead. Morgan Hewitt pitched all seven innings for the Kohawks, recording five strikeouts. Offensively, Coe managed just four hits—two each from Bladecki and McCarty—and scored only one run in the 5–1 loss.

GAME ONE
SIMPSON 8 – COE 6
  • The Kohawks surrendered a run in the first inning due to two errors but quickly responded with a solo home run from catcher Katelyn Bladecki. Coe's bats stayed active, and in the third inning, the Kohawks took the lead on a grand slam by senior Marissa Vodicka. Natalie Hitt kept the Storm offense quiet for several innings, pitching a complete game. However, Simpson broke through in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring multiple runs to regain the lead and add insurance, making it 8–5 after five innings. The Kohawks applied pressure late, sending seven hitters to the plate in a comeback attempt, but managed only one run. Simpson held on for the 8–6 victory.

GAME TWO
SIMPSON 5 – COE 1
  • The Kohawks once again fell behind in the first inning despite recording the first two outs. Pitcher Morgan Hewitt started strong with a groundout and a pop-up to the middle infield, but two doubles and an error allowed the Storm to take a 2–0 lead. Both teams remained scoreless over the next three innings. Coe got on the board in the fifth inning when Grace McCarty hit a double to left field, and Maddie Harris followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in the team's only run. That would be the Kohawks' only run of the game. Simpson added two more runs in the seventh inning to secure the 5–1 win. Hewitt pitched all seven innings as Coe dropped its first two conference games.
