Baseball sweeps Loras in regular season finale; Walsh shines in game one, offense scores four in ninth inning of game two

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Coe College baseball team finished off the regular season in style, polishing off a three-game sweep of Loras College with a 7-2 victory in game one and an 8-6 win in game two. The Kohawks got a strong pitching performance from Jack Walsh in the opener as the junior picked up his eighth win of the year with five innings of work, where he allowed one unearned run. His offense scored twice in the fifth, and once in the sixth as Brent Yonkovic, Austin Gomez, and Jon Wille each recorded RBI singles to provide Coe a lead through six. The Duhawks managed one back in the seventh, but a four-run eighth, highlighted by a two-run double from Wille, was enough for Landon Moore, who finished off the game out of the pen. The Kohawks trailed for much of game two, spotting the Duhawks a 3-0 lead after the first. RBI from Gomez and Ryan Brosius in the second and another RBI from Brosius in the fourth tied the game. Coe took its first lead in the sixth on yet another RBI from Brosius as he produced a safety squeeze to plate the go-ahead run. Loras regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs before adding an insurance run in the seventh. The Kohawk offense woke up in the top of the ninth, pushing across four runs on three hits as Wille drove home the first run before a two-run single from Yonkovic gave Coe the lead. Michael Matejka entered from the pen with a runner on and one down in the ninth and finished off the Duhawks, getting a groundout and a game-ending strikeout.

GAME ONE
COE 7 - LORAS 2
  • Loras got to Walsh for a lead in the third inning, scoring with a one-out single after the leadoff runner reached on an error. His offense picked him up in the fifth, scoring twice to take the lead for good. The Kohawks got back-to-back RBI singles from Yonkovic and Gomez as the pair drove home Jon Wille and Louis Smelcer, who set the table earlier in the frame. Wille pushed home an insurance run in the following inning, delivering an RBI single to right to plate Jake Mitchell, who got on with a one-out single. Loras pulled one back with a run in the home half of the seventh, getting a two-out double off Moore, who pitched four strong innings in relief of Walsh. The offense sealed the deal in the top of the fourth, getting four runs on four hits to lead 7-2. Wille started the scoring with a two-run double and then trotted home on a double from Eli Elsbecker. Yonkovic picked up his second RBI of the game and finished off the scoring later with two outs, plating Elsbecker for 7-2.

GAME TWO
COE 8 - LORAS 6
  • Loras jumped ahead with three runs in the bottom of the first, getting two RBI singles and a wild pitch for the early lead. Coe responded in the top of the second with Gomez and Brosius plating runs to cut into the deficit. Brosius picked up another RBI two innings later, driving home Gomez with a sacrifice fly to level the game at three. The Kohawks took their first lead in the sixth inning as Gomez doubled with one down and later came around to score on a sacrifice bunt RBI from Brosius to make it 4-3. Loras regained the lead in the bottom of the frame, getting a two-out, two-run single after Coe nearly pitched its way out of a jam. The Duhawks extended the lead with a key insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, pushing the advantage to two with just six outs to get. Coe came to life in the top of the ninth, getting two leadoff runners as Mitchell singled and Ryan Thoreson walked. Wille put the ball in play for the first run, singling to short before an error allowed Mitchell to make it 6-5. Yonkovic delivered the go-ahead knock two batters later, driving home a pair of runners with a single to center. Coe got an extra insurance run on a defensive miscue from the Duhawks as Will Hosch put a ball in play that allowed Yonkovic to score. The Duhawks got a one-out walk, forcing Matejka into the game. The senior did his job, earning his second save of the year as he got back-to-back outs to finish off the sweep.
