Volleyball splits with Millikin & UW-Stevens Point

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College Volleyball team hosted the Millikin University Big Blue and UW-Stevens Point Pointers on Saturday, September 26th, in the Kohawk Triangular invite. Coe's first match of the day was against Millikin, which saw the Kohawks take care of the Big Blue in three sets. The Kohawks would finish the first match with a .270 hitting percentage; 25 of the team's 36 kills came from Tessa Casebolt, Jasmine Shields, and Brooke Sullivan. Coe and Stevens Point battled in the final match of the day, trading punches throughout. The Kohawks took an early 1-0 lead with a 25-17 victory in set one but the Pointers responded with back-to-back wins to grab momentum. Coe dominated the fourth set, winning 25-16 while limiting Stevens Point to a .038 attack percentage. The Pointers came out hot in the decisive fifth, racking up seven kills and a .375 hitting percentage en route to victory. Sullivan, Shields and Mahri Kaczmarek led Coe's attacking effort in the loss, each hitting double digits with 16, 15 and 10 kills respectively.

  • After an even-matched first few points, the first set was tied 7-7. The Kohawks grabbed the lead and never looked back. At one point, the Kohawks won six straight points to swell the lead to nine. Coe won four of the last five points to take set one, 25-14. In set two, Coe grabbed an early 3-0 lead and kept it for the rest of the set. Points would come in bunches for the Kohawks as Millikin had no answer. The Coe lead grew to as many as 13 points going into the last of the second set, as the Kohawks would take set two 25-12. The hosts put the match away in the third frame, forcing Mililkin into nine errors while hitting .258 as a team. The Kohawks used an 8-3 run midway through the set to establish control, seeing out a 14-8 lead to clinch the victory.

UWSP 3 - COE 2
  • Coe jumped out to an early lead, dominating the opening set with a 25-17 decision. It was back-and-forth early on but the Kohawks took control late, ending the match with a 12-5 run to go up 1-0. The Pointers quickly answered in set two, building a 15-11 lead and never looking back as they leveled the match. UWSP opened set three on fire, taking an 8-2 lead to force a timeout from Coe. The Kohawks regained their footing but could not overcome the deficit, outscoring the Pointers 19-17 in the closing stretch, but UWSP hung on to go up 2-1. Coe clapped back in the fourth, taking an early 10-2 lead as Shields had three kills at the start. The Kohawks stayed hot for the rest of the set, limiting the Pointers to just eight kills and a .038 attack percentage. UWSP responded in the fifth, building a 6-2 lead before extending the advantage to overcome Coe.
