Kohawks defeat Elmhurst 3-1 in Final Match of Weekend

AURORA, Ill. - On Saturday afternoon, Coe battled back against the Elmhurst Bluejays to finish the weekend with a win, three sets to one. The Kohawks' third match of the Jim Coleman Memorial Classic ended on a positive note as they had been winless in the first two matches of the weekend. The Blue Jays took a very competitive first set, 25-17, but the Kohawks turned the match on its head. In the second set, both teams were taking points, and neither team could take control of the set. Kohawks setter Lexi Hammer played a big part in her team's success as she recorded 36 of the total 40 assists. 12 of those 36 assists occurred in the second set alone. The match would be all tied up at one set apiece going into set three. Coe would jump out to a quick 4-0 lead before Elmhurst was able to break the string of Kohawk points and make the score 5-2. The set would be tied back up 9-9 in the middle of the set, and it would remain close till the very end. The third set would finish 25-23 in favor of Coe and would put them one set away from the win. Coe's offensive points were led by freshman Jasmine Shields, as she recorded 14 kills for the Kohawks. Another back-and-forth start to the set kept the Bluejays in the match, but in the end, Coe would prove to be too much and they would win set four 25-17, taking the match 3-1. Following the conclusion of the tournament, Kohawk junior Tessa Casebolt was named to the all-tournament team.

GAME FACTS:
COE 3 - ELMHURST 1
  •  The first set was a close battle as the lead was traded back and forth before Elmhurst took a slight two-point lead. Coe grabbed a bit of momentum and won four straight points to take a two-point lead of their own. The lead never eclipsed more than two points as Elmhurst started to win points in bunches, eventually taking the first set by a score of 25-17
  • Set two would once again be a back-and-forth affair, as the score would be tied up at five. Attacking efforts from Naj Price and Jasmine Shields helped the Kohawks as they would combine for seven kills in the second set. Points would come in bundles for the Kohawks as they went on a three-point run two different times in the set, and this would propel Coe to a 25-20 win
  • An early string of points from Coe would start them off with a strong 4-0 lead. Coe would hold onto their lead till the Bluejays tied up the set at 7-7 with a five-point run. Elmhurst would quickly take a lead, but it was short-lived as the Kohawks grabbed the lead right back at 13-12. There were five lead changes in this set alone, but the fifth and final lead change would favor the Kohawks as they took the penultimate set 25-23.
  • The Kohawks would take the momentum from the previous two sets to help make sure they would secure their first win of the weekend. Coe would grab the lead early and would not give it up for the rest of the set. They would get up to a 10-5 lead with points from Abi Bowe, Tessa Casebolt, and Shields. The Kohawks would power their way to victory, as they would finish the set 25-17 and would win the match three sets to one. Coe's overall record improved to 2-2.

Up next: The Kohawks are back on the road as they head to Eau Claire, Wisc., to play in the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament. They open with a match against St. Catherine University on Friday, September 11th. Then, on Saturday, September 12th, they play back-to-back matches, facing Edgewood College and then the hosts, UW-Eau Claire.
