#21 Volleyball Hangs on in Five-Set Battle with Nebraska Wesleyan, Improves to 6-0 in A-R-C Play

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The #21 Coe College Volleyball team outlasted Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday evening, downing the Prairie Wolves 3-2 in a five-set thriller. Coe jumped ahead to start the match, claiming a 25-19 victory in the opening set but Nebraska Wesleyan answered and tied the match with a 25-22 decision. The back-and-forth action continued in the third and fourth sets with each team securing one each, forcing a decisive fifth period. Coe raced out to an early 5-0 lead in the final set, forcing an early timeout from NWU. The Prairie Wolves battled and cut the deficit to just three points but the hosts scored three of the final four points in the match to secure the victory. Madi Parson had a team and season-high 19 kills in the match, adding a pair of service aces and 14 digs. Freshman setter Maddy Maahs also posted a season-best for Coe, racking up 54 assists and two service aces. Ella Koloc and Gracie Urbatsch also added to the season bests for Coe, recording 33 digs and 11 kills respectively. The win moves Coe to 19-5 overall and 6-0 in the A-R-C while Nebraska Wesleyan drops to 16-8 on the year and 3-3 in the league.

  • Coe took an early lead in the match, claiming a 25-19 victory in the opening set. Parson was on fire in the first period, racking up seven kills while hitting .462 overall. Maahs had 12 helpers in the period and dished out dimes to six different Kohawks. The Kohawks jumped out to an early 11-5 lead in the frame and fought off a late rally from the visitors en route to the 1-0 advantage. 
  • NWU answered in the second set, racing out to an early lead before tying the match with a 25-22 victory. The Priarie Wolves opened up a 5-1 lead, forcing a timeout from Coe and maintained the lead for a majority of the period. The Kohawks fought back during the final few points of the set, pulling within two points of the lead but NWU hung on to tie the match at one. 
  • The Kohawks got back on track in the third, regaining a lead in the match thanks to a 25-20 victory in the set. Coe was led by Lueken in the period who recorded five kills in eight attempts. As a team, Coe hit .220 in the frame, registering 17 kills to just six errors. The hosts used a big run in the middle of the set to gain momentum, outscoring the visitors 8-4 to grab a 19-12 lead which proved enough for Coe to go back in front. 
  • Nebraska Wesleyan showed no quit despite being down 2-1, answering back with an impressive fourth set which resulted in a 25-19 victory. Both teams were on fire on offense but the Prairie Wolves hit .318 in the set and committed just two errors. The visitors used an early run to take a 7-2 lead and never looked back, keeping Coe at a comfortable distance for a majority of the frame. 
  • Coe exploded in the decider, scoring the first six points of the set to gain control. Nebraska Wesleyan slowly began to chip away at the lead following a timeout, clawing back to within three points at 12-9. Coe buckled down and secured the win, scoring three of the final points in the period to remain undefeated in league play.
