CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College women's basketball players
Ellie Wisner and
Kaalyn Petersen were selected to the 2021-22 All-American Rivers Conference Women's Basketball team which was announced by the league offices on Wednesday. Wisner, who was selected to the Second Team and Petersen, who was selected to the Honorable Mention Squad, helped the Kohawks advance to their fourth-straight A-R-C tournament in '21-'22. The duo joins Wartburg's Jaedon Murphy & Sara Faber as the only pair of underclassmen from the same school to earn all-conference honors. Jenna Taylor (Simpson), Karsen Kershner (Dubuque) and Brian Niemuth (Simpson) rounded out the honors, earning the league's Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year awards.
Ellie Wisner - Second Team
Wisner, a freshman from Naperville, is Coe's first freshman women's basketball player to earn all-conference honors since Aleena Hobbs secured the honor in 2015. Ellie led the Kohawk offense during her first season in crimson and gold, averaging a team-best 13.9 points, 1.1 assists, 3.2 boards and 0.5 steals per game. Wisner also posted a team-high 81.1 percent from the free-throw line while shooting 36.6 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from beyond the arc. She finished the season ranked inside the top-25 in the A-R-C in field goal percentage, top-15 in 3-point field goal percentage and top-six in scoring, free throw percentage and 3-pointers per game.
An A-R-C Player of the Week winner, Wisner eclipsed the 20-point mark in five games including three times in league play. She had an especially strong end to conference play for the Kohawks, scoring 20-plus in three of the final four games of the regular season for Coe. The stretch began with a new career-high for Wisner as she scored 28 points in a victory over Buena Vista. Wisner was 6-of-9 from 3 in the game and 8-of-14 from the floor as she led the Kohawks to the crucial victory. She then responded with back-to-back 20-point performances, scoring 23 in a loss to Wartburg and 20 in a postseason-clinching victory at Nebraska Wesleyan.
Kaalyn Petersen - Honorable Mention
Petersen, a sophomore from Davenport, set a new single-season rebounding record in her second season in Cedar Rapids while earning her first all-conference honor. The Kohawks key post player was a force on offense, averaging 9.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game and chipping in with 1.4 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.7 steals per contest. Petersen, who led the league with 10 double-doubles, was second in the A-R-C in total rebounding, rebounds per game and blocks per game. She also ranked inside the top-26 in scoring, assists and steals and inside the top-15 in field goal percentage.
Petersen was a dominant presence in the paint for the Kohawks all season, eclipsing the double-digit scoring mark in 14 games. She put together a stretch from December 1-January 5 where she recorded six double-doubles in a seven-game span. Kaalyn scored a season-high 19 points for Coe in a win over Nebraska Wesleyan as the sophomore pulled down 10 boards to record a double-double. Petersen shot 6-of-9 from the floor and 7-of-12 from the line against the Prairie Wolves and added a pair of steals on the defensive end.
