Volleyball wraps up opening weekend with defeat to #5 Northwestern & victory over Bethel

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Coe College volleyball team wrapped up its opening weekend of 2023 on Saturday afternoon, splitting a pair of matches against #5 Northwestern and Bethel. Coe quickly fell behind to the hosts Northwestern, dropping the opening set 25-14 before storming back in set two for a 25-22 victory. The Eagles secured the victory with back-to-back set wins in the third and fourth, handing Coe its first loss of the season thanks to a strong .309 hitting percentage. The Kohawks responded well in their final game of the weekend, defeating Bethel 3-0 for their first sweep of the season. As a team Coe hit .272 and racked up 48 kills while holding the Royals to just 27 kills and a .123 attack percentage. Following the conclusion of the tournament sophomore setter Maddy Maahs was named to the all-tournament team after posting 30-plus assists in all three matches.

GAME FACTS
  • The Eagles started out on fire in the opening set, hitting .483 with 14 kills and zero errors. Coe quickly answered in the second set, forcing five errors and attacking at a .262 clip to even the match. 
  • The hosts regained the lead with another strong offensive set in the third, posting a match-high 17 kills to go up 2-1. Northwestern finished the match in the fourth set, taking advantage of seven Kohawk attacking errors while totaling 16 kills. 
  • Coe was led by Grace Lueken who finished with a team-high nine kills and was the most efficient player, attacking at a .333 clip. Gracie Urbatsch, Maggie Furlong and Maddie Harris all chipped in with eight kills each while Madi Parson added seven.

GAME FACTS
  • Coe quickly bounced back in the second match of the day despite falling behind early 8-4. The Kohawks erased the deficit with a strong run to take the lead at 21-20 and never looked back, taking the opener 25-21. 
  • The Kohawk offense dominated the second set, posting a match-high 19 kills with just four errors. Furlong and Urbatsch were on fire during the set, recording five and four kills respectively to put their team ahead 2-0. 
  • Coe clinched the sweep in the third set with another strong offense outing, hitting .333 with 15 kills and just two errors. The Kohawks defense stepped up in the final frame, posting three blocks en route to a 25-17 victory. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action next weekend for their annual home tournament, hosting the Mabel Lee Invite on September 8 and 9. Coe will face Augustana and Illinois College on Friday before matching up with UW-Whitewater on Saturday.
