Game Recap: Football |

Football falls short in defensive battle with no. 13/14 Wartburg

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College football team dropped its first game of the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field, falling 14-7 to no. 13/14 Wartburg College. The Kohawks and Knights played a scoreless opening half as each defense proved too tough to crack in the opening 30 minutes of action. Wartburg opened the second half with the game's first touchdown at the 7:21 mark, capping off a nine-play, 51-yard drive with a one-yard run. The Knights doubled their lead early in the fourth quarter, striking for the game's lone explosive play as they took a 14-0 lead on a 43-yard touchdown pass. Coe fought back and quickly halved the deficit, marching 67 yards in nine plays and 2:42 as Trenton Barnes plunged in from 10 yards out. The Kohawk defense came up big and made a stop on the following possession, giving the ball back to the offense. Coe had two more shots to tie the game before the final whistle, turning it over on downs on the first drive before a game-ending sack on the final play.

GAME FACTS
  • The defenses dominated the game in the opening two quarters, forcing eight total punts and missed a 45-yard field as Wartburg squandered the only scoring chance in the opening half. The Knights struck on their first drive of the second half, taking over on their own 49 yard line after a solid return of 25 yards. The visitors capitalized on the short field and made it 7-0 minutes later, scoring on a third-and-one from the goal line. Coe moved deep into Wartburg territory on the next drive with a lengthy drive but an incomplete pass on fourth down intended for Jeron Senters gave it back to the Knights. Wartburg added to the lead seven plays later, hitting a deep play-action bomb down the middle as Leo Dodd found his receiver for 43 yards. The Kohawks wasted no time in finding a response on the following drive, cashing in for six as Barnes capped off a solid drive. Clay Krousie hooked up with three different receivers on the drive and completed 5-of-6 passes to lead the offense down the field. Coe forced a punt on the ensuing possession after one first down, giving it back to the offense at Wartburg's 44 after a bad punt. The offense couldn't capitalize, quickly giving it back to the visitors with a three-and-out. Coe's defense answered the call again in the dying minutes, getting off the field again and giving Krousie the ball with 44 seconds to play. The senior quarterback hit Devon Kollasch for a big gain on the opening play but a penalty, incomplete pass and game-ending pick killed Coe's chance at a game-tying score.
