Softball takes one of two in final non-conference matchup at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Coe College softball team picked up one win in its final non-conference doubleheader of the year on Wednesday, splitting a pair of games with Illinois Wesleyan. The Titans edged Coe in the opener for a 2-1 victory, getting a walk-off double in the seventh for a dramatic win. Coe bounced back in game two for a 6-2 decision, scoring a pair of first-inning rounds to jump ahead early. Addie Menke added a solo homer in the third to extend the lead but the hosts answered with a run in the third and fourth to pull within one. The Kohawks put insurance on the board in the fifth and sixth innings, getting RBI from Madi Parson, Bree Mangelsen and Ruby Kappeler. Ellie Thurow pitched the final three innings for starter Devan Baggett, combining with her teammate for another solid outing in the circle.

Game Facts
  • There were zeros across the board in the first three innings for both teams as Coe left two runners on in the third during the best scoring chance. The Kohawks again left a pair of runners on in the top of the fourth, setting the stage of IWU to take the lead. The Titans took advantage with a one-out homer, grabbing a 1-0 lead with one swing of the bat. The Kohawks responded in the fifth, tying the game on an RBI single from Kappeler who pushed home Heather Boeckenstedt. Coe threatened for more, getting the bases loaded with two outs but Illinois Wesleyan escaped with it still tied. The hosts secured the victory dramatically in the seventh, leading off with a hit batter before a game-winning double two batters later.
