Softball drops Super Regional opener to no. 7 Case Western Reserve

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Coe College softball team suffered an 8-5 defeat to no. 7 Case Western Reserve on Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the Super Regional matchup. The Kohawks scored the game's opening run in the top of the first inning, getting an RBI double from Skyler Stookey. CWRU responded with runs in the next two innings, getting single tallies in the first and second innings to take the lead. The Kohawks got one back in the fourth inning with an Addie Menke RBI double but again the Spartans responded, scoring three in the bottom of the inning to regain a 5-2 lead. The Kohawks continued to battle, tying the game with one run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Keera Ball brought home the first run with a walk before Ruby Kappeler and Madi Parson delivered back-to-back RBI hits in the sixth to tie it. Case Western came back in the bottom of the frame and scored three runs to regain the lead for good, scoring with a single and a sacrifice before a defensive mistake allowed the third run to score.

  • The Kohawks got the opening run in the top of the first, getting an RBI double from Stookey to take a 1-0 lead. Coe threatened to add more, loading the bases later in the inning but CWRU escaped the jam. The Spartans answered in their half of the inning, getting a two-out RBI to level the score. The hosts took the lead in the second with a leadoff homer, going up 2-1 with a solo shot. The Kohawks answered two innings later with two outs, getting a clutch double from Menke to score Keera Ball. Case Western had an answer again for Coe in the bottom of the frame, scoring with a pair of RBI singles. Ball made it 5-3 in the top of the fifth, drawing a bases-loaded walk with two down. Coe tied the game one inning later, getting back-to-back RBI hits from Kappeler and Parson. Case Western quickly answered in its half, getting a leadoff single before moving the runner to second. The hosts got runs in three straight at-bats, scoring with a single and a sacrifice before an error made ti 8-5. 
 
Up Next: The Kohawks are back in action tomorrow, taking on Case Western on the final day of Super Regional action. Game one is scheduled for 12 PM CT and an if-necessary game will follow at 2:30 PM CT.
