Volleyball takes down (RV) Northwestern & Bethel to cap off perfect opening weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn.  – The Coe College volleyball team capped off a perfect opening weekend with a pair of wins Saturday, defeating tournament host (RV) Northwestern 3-1 in the first match before a 3-0 sweep of Bethel in match two. Coe got off to the perfect start in the morning match against the Eagles, defeating UNW 25-20 while hitting .355 in the frame. The Kohawks edged the Eagles 26-24 in the second set and later responded from a third-set loss to win 26-24 in the clinching frame. Coe was dominant in the final match of the week against the Royals, winning 25-15, 25-16 and 25-22 in the clincher. The Kohawks hit .274 as a team and held Bethel to just .158 attacking percentage.

COE 3 - NORTHWESTERN 1
  • Coe's first set was impressive, hitting .355 with 13 kills and two errors. Maggie Furlong and Marissa Meyer each had four kills in the period, helping Coe score five of the last eight points for a 25-20 decision. Avery Beckett ripped off five kills in the second frame including one to put Coe ahead 24-23 before back-to-back kills from Furlong and Meyer made it 26-24 and 2-0. Northwestern responded in set three with a strong attacking effort, making just one error while recording 10 kills. Coe came back and ended the match in the fourth set, taking a 14-6 lead early in the contest after a long serving stretch from Bella Rio. The Eagles fought back to take a 19-16 lead but Coe hung tough, getting a go-ahead kill from Maddy Maahs before a match-sealing error from UNW. In total, Beckett (16) and Furlong (16) led the team in kills while Maahs had 44 assists and 11 digs for her second-straight double-double. Bella Rio had a team-high 17 digs and Najolie Price added four block assists for Coe which had 10 as a team.

COE 3 - BETHEL 0 
  • Beckett was one again on fire in the second match of the day, hitting .458 with 14 kills and just three errors. She was dominant from the opening set, recording four kills and no errors in the first period as Coe cruised to a 25-15 win. Beckett added six more kills in another emphatic 25-16 decision for the Kohawks while Meyer and Maddie Harris chipped in with five and four respectively. Bethel forced a fight out of the Kohawks in the final set, limiting Coe's offense to a .151 attack percentage. Coe managed to grind out the win with four kills from Beckett and Harris, erasing a 21-20 deficit late in the frame.
