Volleyball splits matches at Sugar Loaf Classic, defeats hosts Saint Mary’s 3-1

WINONA, Minn. – The Coe College volleyball team split a pair of matches at Saint Mary's Sugar Loaf Classic Saturday, falling 3-2 to Bethany Lutheran in the opening match of the day before defeating the host Cardinals 3-1 in match two. Coe dropped the opening two sets against Bethany Lutheran, spotting the Vikings a 2-0 lead after falling 25-21 in both frames. The Kohawks bounced back in the third to remain alive and dominated the fourth set, earning a 25-15 decision to force a fifth set. Bethany Lutheran pulled off a late comeback in the decider, scoring five of the last six points to claim the victory. Coe responded well in its second match of the day, defeating host Saint Mary's in four sets. The Kohawks hit .379, led by Kelsey Hansel who had 17 kills. Avery Beckett (12), Maddie Harris (11) and Maggie Furlong (10) joined Hansel with double-digit kills, rounding out a dominant effort.

  • Bethany Lutheran built a 10-4 lead in the opening set, enough to withstand a late comeback attempt from the Kohawks. Coe trailed again in set two but a late run tied the frame at 20. The Vikings had another answer to grab the 2-0 lead, scoring five of the final six for another 25-21 decision. The Kohawks came to life in the third set, trading points throughout the period before a late 5-1 extended the contest. Coe dominated early in the fourth set, jumping out to an 11-4 lead as Hansel ripped off a long serving streak. Bethany Lutheran pulled it back to a seven-point deficit at 19-12 but the Kohawks saw out the victory with a strong closing run. The Kohawks and Vikings traded blows in the fifth set but Coe took an 11-8 lead after an error from BLC and a kill from Hansel. Bethany Lutheran fought back to force extra points and later scored three consecutive points, securing a 17-15 match-clinching win.

COE 3 - SAINT MARY'S 1 
  • The Kohawks were on fire in the second match of the day, hitting .379 as a team. The Cardinals managed to claim the opening set, hitting a staggering .400 themselves en route to a 25-19 decision. Coe responded with three dominant sets, winning 25-13, 25-12 and 25-14. Hansel, who had seven kills in the opening period, helped close the match, recording four kills in the third set and three in the clincher.
