Kostelny Bags Brace as Men's Soccer Steals Bremner Point in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Bremner Derby was renewed Wednesday night as the Kohawks made a short trip to Mount Vernon to face their rivals, Cornell. The match got off to a flying start, with Coe registering two shots within the first six minutes; however, Cornell would gain the upper hand, scoring in the 14th minute, 1-0. It would take until near the end of the first half for the Kohawks to level the match, as Junior forward Brandon Kostelny would fire a shot into the bottom corner in the 34th minute. Coe was relentless on offense, taking 13 shots at the Cornell net and winning eight corners all in the first half alone. The start of the second half is where we would see the passion from this rivalry take off as two Kohawks and one Ram were shown a yellow card in the 49th minute. The Kohawks would waste no time after the bookings, as Kostelny would double the Coe advantage, which would eventually be enough to seal the victory.

GAME FACTS
COE 2 - CORNELL 1
  • A lively first half would see fouls from both sides in the first two minutes. Less than a minute later, shots from Coe's Kostelny and Jonah Lasselle put pressure on the Cornell defense. An early first-half goal would be scored by Cornell in the 14th minute of the match on just their first shot of the match. That would also be their only shot of the first half, as the Kohawks outshot Cornell 13-1. The Coe attack would add more pressure on the Cornell keeper and would finally break open the scoring for the Kohawks as Kostelny would net his third goal of the season and put his team back on level terms in the 34th minute.
  • The second half would start just as lively as the first half, with both teams being shown yellow cards within the first four minutes. Coe would use the fast start and capitalize with a goal from Kostelny to break the deadlock just six minutes into the second half. The brace from Kostelny brings his season total to four goals in four games. Three more yellow cards were shown in the middle of the second half, two given to Coe and one to Cornell. Cornell fought hard to try and tie the game again, outshooting the Kohawks 14-10, but it would not be enough as the match finished 2-1 in favor of the Kohawks.
