Anne Pinckney started golf at age seven, taught by the late Charlie Burkart, a well-remembered Cedar Rapids golf pro. From those early days to now Anne has played and taught golf, a game that is an important part of her life. Today she is Coe College's women's golf coach. At Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School she played on two Mississippi Valley championship golf teams, and as a senior was Medalist in the State Tournament. As a freshman at Coe College she was a member of the men's golf team in 1977. Her degree is from Coe, but she also took elementary education courses at the University of Iowa where she was a member of the Iowa women's golf team for three years. At both Kennedy and Coe she earned the captain's position in volleyball. At Kennedy, she was chosen for the All-State team as a senior. At Coe she was volleyball captain as a sophomore and as a senior, she was on the Midwest Conference championship team. Anne has taught physical education and science at Cedar Rapids high schools and middle schools. She has been the coach of the Washington volleyball team and is now coach of the Kennedy golf team. But it was on the golf course that the name Anne Pinckney became widely known. She has competed in the U.S. Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship and four times she has been in the U.S. Golf Association Women's Public Links Championship. She is a long-time member of the U.S.G.A.'s Junior Girls Committee, and she has been a counselor at the Billy Casper Golf Camp in San Diego. She always got good support from home for her golf. Anne and her father, Wally Pinckney '49, won the Iowa Father-Daughter Tournament in 1980. On the local golf scene, Anne won the Cedar Rapids Inter-Club Junior Girls Tournament four consecutive years. When she moved up to the women's division she won the Cedar Rapids-Marion Women's Amateur Championship seven times. Anne once stated that her ambition was to teach young people about science and golf. She has done that well and along the way has won a long string of individual championships. In recognition of competent teaching and competitive skill, we welcome Anne Marie Pinckney into the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame.
