Scholar-athlete Marvin Levy won Phi Beta Kappa honors in the classroom at Coe at the same time he was winning three letters in football, four in basketball, and one in track. In his spare time he was president of the Student Council and the Clan of C. Not many coaches prepare for their careers by earning a masters degree in history from Harvard. But Marv Levy returned to Coe in 1953 with that kind of credential. He assisted in football three years, coached track three years, and after assisting two years in basketball, coached the 1956 cage team to the Midwest Conference title and the Iowa NAIA championship. From Coe he moved to head coaching positions at University of New Mexico, University of California, and College of William and Mary. He won coach of the year awards in both the Skyline and Southern conferences. In 1969 Marv joined the ranks of professional coaches as an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles. In succeeding years came his terms with the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins, where his introduced the concept of paying painstaking attention to the special teams, traditionally a casually-coached phase of the game. Time and again his gang of forgotten shock troops made the breaks or touchdowns that brought victory. His skill in all phases of football won him a coveted head coach's job with the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian League in 1973. Marv Levy has enjoyed success in all phases of sports; as a student athlete, a small college coach, a major university coach, a professional assistant and now head coach. In respect and praise for this record of success, it is an honor for me to present Marvin Levy for induction as a Charter Member of the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame. October 26, 1973
