Kimberly Gibney, a third-generation Kohawk, won 12 varsity letters in three sports at Coe. She played four years of softball, basketball and volleyball. She wasn't just a player. She was a star. She won MVP honors in each of her three sports. In softball Kim batted .412 as a freshman and raised that batting average to .452 as a senior when the Kohawks shared the Midwest Conference title. That year she led the team in home runs, times on base, hits, runs scored and runs batted in. In volleyball, she won her varsity position as a freshman and was named best spiker that year. Far from being a contender when Kim was a freshman, the volleyball team matured rapidly and in her senior year they won the Midwest Conference title. Like all women's sports at the time, basketball was just getting seriously underway at Coe. During her four years on the team Kim was consistently the high point scorer while at the same time often being named the best defensive player in the game. Her career scoring high was 31 points in her freshman year. Kim Gibney was both an athlete and a scholar. She was consistently on the Dean's List and was graduated magna cum laude with majors in biology and general science. She completed an honors project evaluating the Coe women's athletic program. She has kept up her interest in sports. Kim is a biology teacher and volleyball coach at Blue Valley North High School in Kansas City. Kimberly Gibney was one of the pioneer sports stars who helped Coe develop into a powerhouse in women's athletics. To her 12 varsity letters, we proudly add membership in the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame.
