Hall of Fame
Ronald Schirm, Class of 1954, has always been associated with winners in sports. His philosophy of coaching grows out of his own experience and emphasized discipline, striving to be the best, and never giving up. Using this approach to athletics, Ron Schirm has fashioned a worthy career marked by winners all along the line. At Coe he played guard on two Midwest Conference Championship teams. Three times he was named All-Conference Guard. After military service, he became a teacher and coach at Wilson Junior High School and then at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. At Jefferson, he coached the defense on football that won state championships in 1966 and in 1972. His Jefferson teams have won six conference titles in the very competitive Mississippi Valley Conference. In track and field Ron Schirm has been both assistant and head track coach for the J-Hawks. He coached not only a number of state champions, but also one national shot-put champion. In June, 1986 he completed 30 years of coaching and teaching physical education. Thus, it is appropriate to celebrate that anniversary and Ron's contribution in sports in Cedar Rapids by making him a member of the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame.
