The pride of Orion, Illinois, Mike Matzen was a four-year letterwinner tor Kohawk football teams coached by Bob 1'hurness 02. He was an all-conference punter his junior and senior seasons while also starting
at offensive guard. He averaged 41 yards per punt and led the nation in punting yards his senior season, when he earned All-American honors from Kodak, Pizza Hut and the Associated Press. His 2,626 punting yards that season still stands as the school record. He's 2-1/2 football fields ahead of his nearest competitor. Hot 715 career, he is one of just six players in school history to have punted over 100 times. His 4,204 punting yards tanks as the fourth most in school history. His career average of 40.4 yards per punt is 1-1/2 yards better than any other Kohawk before or since. The longest punt of his career went for 74 yards and none of his punts for Coe were returned tor touchdowns A business administration and mathematics major, Mike owns a construction company in Orion.
