If not for overhearing a conversation between Coe classmates about workouts, Marika Pewe ’95 might not have played softball for the Kohawks. Score an assist for Michelle Patterson ’95 and Sarah Shinn ’95 on Marika’s induction into the Coe Athletics Hall of Fame.
A four-year letterwinner and four-time All-Midwest Conference South Division honoree at first base, Marika was team MVP as a sophomore in 1993. Her .457 batting average that season stands fifth in school history.
She graduated as the career leader in hits with 151, RBIs with 116 and home runs with 12. Her .376 career batting average ranked second in school history until 2000. Marika still ranks third in school history with 41 doubles, fourth with 917 fielding chances, and fifth with a .597 slugging percentage and 803 putouts.
During her four seasons in the lineup, Coe won four conference championships and earned two NCAA Division III tournament bids, placing second in the 1995 central regional. The Kohawks were 102-35 with Marika on the roster.
Marika lives in Wheatland, Iowa, and is business manager at her high school alma mater, where she has worked since 2001. She recently resigned after nine years as varsity volleyball coach at Calamus Wheatland, but continues to coach junior high boys’ and girls’ basketball.
