The influence of Coach Moray Eby in the history of Coe sports is confirmed once again in the case of Clement C. Carney, Class of 1940. Carney was a tackle on Eby's 1938 and 1939 teams and he assisted Eby as line coach in 1940. On an alumni questionnaire, Clem once described his most memorable incident at Coe as "...working under Moray Eby as an assistant coach. Each day was memorable." After military service, Clem used his playing and coaching experience at Coe to qualify as varsity baseball and basketball coach at Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids. He was also a sophomore football coach there. The 1945 Roosevelt baseball team won the Iowa State baseball championship and returned to the State Finals again in 1946. His Roosevelt basketball teams got as far as the Sub-State Finals in 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1956. During Clem's coaching term at Roosevelt, the Rough Riders won four city titles. With a master's degree in school administration and graduate work at the University of Utah, he moved to Jefferson High School in 1971 as a media specialist. After retirement in 1982, Clem Carney built a retirement home adjacent to the Hawkeye Wildlife Area near Coralville. From there, he has devoted much time to working as a Board Member for "Wetlands for Iowa" and other wildlife conservation programs. He is an avid bow hunter, stalking deer, elk, and turkey. In 1988, Clem's book called You've Got To Be Kidding! was published. It's a collection of improbable, amusing, embarrassing, and enjoyable anecdotes collected from coaches and officials about their experiences in sports. Clem has been a part of the long parade of Kohawks that played football well under Moray Eby and then fashioned a worthy career of teaching and coaching here in Cedar Rapids. Today that career is recognized by his induction into the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame.
