In his 30 years as a military officer Donald D. Dunlop moved 28 times.
But some of his best moves were made when he was quarterback of three of Moray Eby's Coe football teams.
Don Dunlop earned All-Conference honors his junior and senior years in football. In his senior year he scored at least one touchdown in every game except the final contest, and his scores included two 90-yard runs.
He also won All-Conference honors his junior and senior year in basket-ball. As a senior he was captain of the Coe team that shared the Midwest Conference title with Grinnell, the first basketball championship won by Coe in the Midwest Conference.
With World War II already engulfing Europe, ROTC training was vital to many Coe men. In the 1941 Class Donald Dunlop was selected as a Distinguished Military Graduate, a remarkably accurate prediction of things to come. He received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and began a 30-year career with the United States Army as an infantry officer, during which time he received 18 decorations from the United States, France, and Vietnam. During World War II he saw service in Europe, followed by assignments in Korea, Syria and Jordan. He served in Vietnam and his final assignment was as Chief of the U.S. Military Mission to Saudi Arabia.
From 2nd Lieutenant in 1941 he rose to the grade of Brigadier General at the time of his retirement in 1971.
General Dunlop earned a Master of Arts in International Affairs from George Washington University in 1961 and a Master of Arts in Middle Eastern Affairs from Arizona University in 1975.
On the basis of his personal athletic ability and his leadership as Coe's football quarterback and basketball captain, as well as his distinguished leadership as a military officer, Brigadier General Donald D. Dunlop merits our welcome to the Kohawk Athletic Hall of Fame.
