Hall of Fame
Tonight, Randy Johnson becomes the fourth member of the Jackson Five to be honored with induction into the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame. He deservedly joins teammates Ed McFalls, Francis Rohlman and me as representatives of an era when championships were commonplace and Coe teams generated national attention. Under Head Coach Marcus Jackson, the 1972-73 Kohawk men's basketball team won the Midwest Conference championship with a 14-0 record. Jackson's squad was NCAA Midwest Regional champions and ended the year with a 24-1 record - the best in the 107-year history of Coe basketball. It is also the only team in school history to average more than 90 points per game. Randy was one of five players to average double-digits in scoring that year. That team had the longest winning streak in school history at 26 games over Randy's junior and senior years. Randy was a key player for the Jackson Five, earning second-team all-conference honors his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Recruited to Coe out of DeKalb, Ill., by Coach Dave Etienne, Randy made significant contributions to the greatest basketball team in Coe history. Although freshmen were not allowed to play varsity basketball in his era, Randy graduated as the third player in Coe history to score 1,000 points and currently stands 13th among career scoring leaders. Thirty-four years after graduating, he remains one of only three Kohawks to record 600 career rebounds. Randy also played tennis his freshman and senior years and played one game as goalie for the club soccer team, shutting out Cornell 1-0. He was a member of the General Judicial Council, Honorary Degree Committee, Sachem, National Economics Fraternity and Sigma Nu. He received his law degree from Southern Methodist University and is a practicing attorney in Dallas, where he lives with his wife, Pamela. He coached youth soccer, baseball and basketball as his twin sons grew up. He is currently a member of the board of directors for the Airport Assistance Center, a non-profit organization. For his outstanding contributions to Kohawk athletics, I am honored to present Randy John- son for induction into the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame.
