Ronald D. Barnes is a member of a small, exclusive club of Coe athletes. The club has only eight members and they are all former Coe basketball players who have scored 1,000 points or more in basketball careers at Coe. Ron Barnes currently ranks as the third-highest scorer in Coe basketball history with 1,202 points in four years. His point total is exceeded only by those of Al Pursell '58 and Ed McFalls '74. Ron enrolled as a student at Coe from Chicago and immediately caught the eye of Coe basketball coaches as a player of significant potential. Ron fulfilled that potential with distinction during his four years here. He was the leading scorer for Coe in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. In that senior year the Kohawks were second in the Midwest Conference. Ron's abilities were recognized by his teammates as they elected him Most Valuable Player in 1968-69 and 1969-70. He also served as co-captain of the basketball team in 1970. He was chosen by the coaches of the Midwest Conference teams as a member of the All-Conference team in two successive years. He was the only junior selected to the All-Conference team in 1968-69. Because he has scored more points than any Coe basketball player except two, and because he merited Most Valuable Player and All-Conference honors, it is proper that at this time Ronald D. Barnes be inducted into the Coe Athletic Hall of Fame. We are proud to add his name to the roster of many who were genuine stars in Coe sports.
