M. Richard Clausen Dick Clausen gave Coe College eight of the best years of his distinguished career as coach, athletic director, and member of a host of national committees in athletics and physical education. A graduate of the University of Iowa, he coached ten years in high schools before coming to Coe as athletic director and football coach in 1948. Taking over a team that had gone winless in the previous year, Dick Clausen built a 35-24-5 record over the eight seasons and his team won championships in 1950, 1952, and 1955. The 1955 team was undefeated and Mr. Clausen won honors as "small college coach of the year." A lasting contribution to Coe was his reorganization of the physical education teaching major and activity program. Dick Clausen moved to the University of New Mexico as head football coach in 1956. Then he was named athletic director at the University of Arizona in 1958. He served with distinction in that capacity until 1972 when he was named assistant vice president for student relations at the University To cite only a few of his national committee responsibilities one can note that he is a member of the NCAA Extra Events Committee and the Fiesta Bowl Committee. He has served on the executive committee of the National Association Directors, the NCAA Council, and has been both president and secretary of the United States Gymnastics Federation. Ladies and Gentlemen, it is a pleasure for me to present my coach, Dick Clausen, for induction as a Charter Member of the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame. October 26, 1973
