Lloyd C. Harper, Class of 1930, played for three years as center and end on Moray Eby's winning football teams, including the conference champions in 1928 and 1929. At Coe he was also an outfielder on the baseball team. Teammates described him as an effective competitor, a pleasure to his coaches, an inspiring teammate, and a winner. Lloyd Harper spent his lifetime career in athletics. After graduation from Coe he was for eight years athletic director and supervisor of physical education in the Clinton, Iowa, high school. After receiving a master's degree in physical education and hygiene at Stanford University, Mr. Harper served in the Army Air Corps in physical training and as director of the Convalescent Hospital Rehabilitation Program at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. He retired with the rank of Major. After World War II Lloyd Harper became an assistant professor of hygiene and physical education at Harvard University. He was Harvard's freshman basketball and baseball coach and directed the physical rehabilitation program serving more than 500 veterans. From 1949 to 1954 he served as athletic director and basketball coach at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. Then, from 1954 to 1970 he was director of admissions at Norwich. In 1951 he was a part of a group of outstanding figures in basketball selected to conduct basketball officiating- ing clinics for service personnel in United States Army bases in Europe. Lloyd Harper was known for his coaching, but his name was also recognized in officiating where he regularly blew the whistle at basketball games in Madison Square Garden, and in contests between well-known Ivy League schools. In recognition of his outstanding abilities as a student-athlete at Coe, as a successful coach, and as a respected official, Coe College is honored to induct posthumously Lloyd C. Harper into the Athletic Hall of Fame. October 14, 1978
