A four-year letterwinner in football and baseball at Coe, Tim Vinyard ’02 was the model of a Division III student-athlete. A 2001 first-team All-American in football and academic all-region honoree in baseball, he was a two-time All-Conference performer in 2000 (first-team quarterback and second-team designated hitter).
Despite an injury-shortened senior season in football, Tim graduated as Coe’s career leader in passing attempts (682) and plays (847). He was second all-time in pass completions (344), total offense (5,262 yards) and passing yardage (5,282). In 2000, Tim set single-season school records for pass completions (166), passing yards (2,775), and passing touchdowns (25).
As a freshman, Tim tied the NCAA record with a 99-yard touchdown pass against Loras. He remains the only Kohawk to have thrown four or more touchdown passes in five games. In 2000, Tim led Coe to the first of a record 15 straight victories over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi.
In baseball, Tim became Coe’s single-season home run king with 12 in 2000. His 29 career home runs ranked second in school history at the time. Starting 125 of the 139 games he played at Coe, Tim graduated as the career leader in walks with 78. He was named a second-team all-central region outfielder in 2002.
A recipient of numerous academic scholarships, Tim’s performance on and off the field made him a most-worthy selection as the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2002.
Tim received his medical degree and orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of Iowa. He received sub-specialty training (fellowship) in the field of orthopaedic surgery sports medicine at the TRIA Orthopedic Center in the Twin Cities. He is currently an orthopedic surgeon in Des Moines, where he volunteers sports medicine coverage to the West Des Moines Valley Tigers and many other Iowa schools and events.
