It’s no exaggeration to say Peggy Schmitt Goerdt ’90 had an instant impact on Kohawk softball. Her 11 triples as a freshman still stands as the school record. She also led the team in RBIs and fielding average while being named most valuable offensive player and securing NSCA All-West Region honors in her first year of college softball when Coe won its fifth straight Midwest Conference Championship.

Granted an extra year of eligibility after an injury-shortened sophomore season, Peggy again led the team in fielding average and batted .342 as a team captain for Coe. She batted a team-leading .344 as a junior and 12 doubles for the year ranked her fourth in the nation for doubles per game.

Peggy was named first-team All-West Region and second-team All-American at first base her senior year. She ranked third in the country with 1.48 RBIs per game and her 40 RBIs stood as the single-season school record for a decade. She finished her Coe softball career batting .414 with a .463 on-base percentage as Coe won its eighth conference championship in 10 years and the school’s first NCAA Division III Regional Tournament bid.

Her 23 career triples is a school record by a long shot. She graduated with a school record 106 RBI, which now stands sixth in school history. She also ranks sixth in school history with 679 putouts and her .565 career slugging percentage is 10th at Coe.
Playing basketball her freshman year at Coe, Peggy led the team with 8.2 rebounds per game, the fourth highest average in school history.

After graduating, Peggy returned to her hometown and continued to play championship caliber softball in Dubuque while coaching at Wahlert High School and teaching in elementary schools. She is a teacher at Carver Elementary School and remains active in coaching with AAU basketball.
