George W. Hidinger, Class of 1942, has spent his whole career in education and athletics. He has been a distinguished coach, teacher, and administrator since his graduation from Coe. As a student-athlete at Coe, he won three letters in both football and track. George began his coaching career with a five-year term at Sumner, Iowa, including an undefeated team in 1950. He then moved to Cedar Rapids Roosevelt High School for six years, leaving there in 1956 with Roosevelt's best-ever record of six wins, one loss and two ties. He then came to Cedar Rapids Jefferson where he was a football coach and athletic director and where he continued on the administrative staff. George Hidinger has been recognized for his coaching and administrative skills in a variety of ways. He was chosen as the Iowa High School Athletic Director of the Year in 1975. The Jefferson senior class voted in 1977 to name the school's Athlete of the Year Award in honor of George Hidinger. The Iowa High School Athletic Association presented a special award to George in 1978 for contributions by an administrator to high school athletics. George Hidinger is a charter member and past president of the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association. He is a member of the National Council of Secondary School Athletic Directors and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Gymnastics Advisory Committee. From the beginning of Iowa high school football playoffs in 1969, George has been a member of the playoff committee. As a coach, athletic director, and high school administrator, George Hidinger has reflected the highest aspirations that Coe College has for one of its graduates. Thus, the college honors both him and himself by naming him to the Athletic Hall of Fame.
