Dale Amendt came to Coe from Grinnell, Iowa, and immediately made his mark in both football and basketball. Once eligible for varsity play, his first game at Coe was the only one in which he was not a starter. How- ever, he soon entered the game against Grinnell, the college in his home- town, and scored three touchdowns. His sophomore team went undefeated and Dale Amendt was the Coe scoring leader, finishing third in the Conference. The scoring title eluded him when three of his touch-down receptions were called back by early whistles blown when officials were fooled by the deceptive magic of quarterback Shady Day. He was the leading receiver for Coe as a junior and senior and was the team's punter all three years. In basketball, Dale Amendt was a starter on a squad that won two Conference championships and played in the NAIA national tournament. After graduation, Dale Amendt joined the United States Navy and served with distinction for 26 1/2 years in naval aviation. He accumulated more than 14,000 flight hours. He retired in 1984 with the rank of Commander. In the navy he played football and basketball for the Pensacola, Florida, Navy Service Team. Throughout his career, he was a player-coach of several service softball teams at locations around the world. Commander Dale Amendt has brought credit to Coe through his distinguished service as a navy flyer and as a sportsman who has participated in sports from college days to the present. As a teammate and a friend, it gives me great pleasure to welcome him into the fellowship of members of the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame.
