Hall of Fame
Dr. John S. Skien came to Coe from Fort Dodge, Iowa, as a freshman in 1912 and he played on a championship team every year. He was on the 1913 and 1914 football champions. In 1915 he played with the baseball winners and in 1916 he was captain of the championship basketball squad. Through his four years at Coe he won letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Dr. Skien was president of his graduating class and was one of the organizers of the "C" Club in 1915. This leadership potential was again realized when in 1937 and 1938 Dr. Skien was president of the Coe Alumni Association. After World War I Dr. Skien coached three years at East High in Waterloo and later at University High in Iowa City. He was also coach and supervisor of freshman athletics at the University of Iowa from 1928 to 1930. During his years in Iowa City he completed a master's degree in physical education and eventually he earned the D.D.S. degree. He practiced dentistry in Cedar Rapids until he retired and moved West in 1959. Wherever Dr. Skien went, he was interested in athletics. He offered high school and college contest and was much involved in YMCA work, particularly as a volleyball player. In recognition of a lifetime of involvement in sports as a player, official, and coach, it is a happy pleasure for me to present Dr. John S. Skien for induction into the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame.
