When David L. Ostrander left Buffalo Center, Iowa to seek his fortune at Coe College, he enrolled as a Bryant Scholar at Coe. This marked him as the outstanding student/athlete prospect in his freshman class. When Dave Ostrander graduated from Coe he proved the wisdom of that selection as he was elected the Outstanding Senior Man in the Class of 1974. He earned respect as a powerful defensive lineman on Kohawk teams in 1971, '72 and '73. In 1972 Dave was Honorable Mention, All-Conference, and, in his senior year, he was All-Midwest Conference at nose guard and captain of the Conference Championship football team. He received the Coach's Award as an outstanding player. After graduation from Coe, Dave earned his M.S. degree at the University of Montana in physical education administration. He began his coaching career in 1975 at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he was head coach of football, track and wrestling. He was intramural director and the revamped intramural program increased participation by 50%. He also supervised and trained the student trainers for all sports. In 1978 he moved to Loras College with the challenging assignment of taking a club football program to intercollegiate status. His job at Loras included teaching physical education, coaching football and track, fundraising, ticket sales, recruiting, scheduling, staffing, supervising trainers, and washing the team uniforms until he was banned from the local laundromat for overuse. Dave moved back into the Midwest Conference when he was named head football and track coach at Monmouth College in 1980. The prospect of collegiate administration drew him away from the gridiron, and he returned to Coe in 1984 as Associate Director of Development. In 1986 he was named Vice President for Development and has held that position for a decade. David L. Ostrander enrolled at Coe with high aspirations. He has fulfilled those aspirations with distinction as a player, coach, teacher, and college officer. His career merits our appreciation through induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
